A Note From Our Financial Secretary

These surely are strange and difficult times, and they might continue for quite a while. We are all in the position of wondering what will happen at church. Congregate meetings are out, what’s the point of Church if we don’t worship together? The answer is that church will mean a lot to us in tough times. We are still “open” for the other six days of the week.

Rev. Mike will still be available for pastoral visits and counseling (properly distanced) and he is still writing sermons and engaged in other church business. Patience will still be cleaning the building, think how good it can look when we aren’t tracking in dirt so often. Office activity will be shifted to his home, but Bob will still be doing his job.

A small group has been organized to act as support staff for anyone who is in quarantine or worse and still needs food, medicine, or other assistance. They can pick up groceries, medicines, or other items to help with recovery and the problems of isolation. Already a sizeable donation has come to the church for the express purpose of aiding anyone for whom the economic realities are too much to handle. We have some items in the food pantry, they will be needed by someone I’m sure.

So as Financial Secretary I want to remind you that there is still need to financially support our church. There are ongoing costs such as utilities, insurance, salaries, and building maintenance, both manse and church. It might seem odd to pay a Pastor when there isn’t Sunday worship for a few weeks, but I remind all of us that most of Rev. Mike’s work is done during the rest of the week anyway. He used to keep a log of his weekly activities, believe me, he is busy most of the time. I know there will be changes in circumstances for some of us, nobody expects donations from anyone who is locked out of work. It is perfectly fine to stop contributing in this sort of situation. But if you can still donate in accordance with your customary pledge, that would be most appreciated and necessary.

The question is: how can I still make a donation when the plate won’t be passed? Here are four suggestions:

  1. You could mail a check (no cash) to the church office at 17 Park St., Canton. Perhaps include a few weeks in one check, it could save postage.
  2. Consider setting up a bill paying account with your local bank. I have my donation sent in on a monthly basis, I don’t have to bother with writing a check, I don’t forget to get it in on the right day, and they pay the postage.
  3. The church is looking into setting up a Pay Pal account. You can use a credit card to send money to them and they send it to us. It doesn’t matter whether you are already set up in Pay Pal or not, it is very easy to use this system.
  4. Call me at 315 854-2871, and I will pick it up at your home. I have enough experience with aseptic technique to not represent a risk of contagion. There is however, risk of conversation.
As with all disasters in history, this will end eventually. With continued support, our church will be ready to be the vibrant community it always has been once we can gather again.
See you in church (sometime), Barry Walch, Financial Secretary
