First Presbyterian Church of Canton Christian Education
The Christian Education Committee
would like to take this opportunity
to Welcome you to our Church.
It is our goal to provide you and your family
with a positive Christian Education experience.
Here at the 1st Presbyterian Church
our Sunday morning Christian Education program
includes the following classes:
- Nursery - Birth through 4 years.
The nursery is staffed from 9:45 am until 11:00 am each Sunday morning. Parents are welcome to bring their child to the nursery prior to the start of the worship service, or have them go to the nursery following the Children's Sermon. Parents are also welcome to have their children remain with them during the entire worship service if they so desire.
- Church School
- 4 yr. old through Grade 2 kids, as well as Grades 3 through 5 kids join in the 10:00 am Worship service, then leave for church school following the Children’s Sermon.
- From 11:00 to 11:45 am kids are invited to join their families and the entire congregation for refreshments. The kids are also able to use the play ground equipment located between the church and manse.
- Junior High & Senior High young people join in the 10:00 am Worship service and Coffee and Conversation, then meet together in their classes from 11:15 am until Noon.
- Christian Education begins with worship--- Each Sunday all God's children, young and old, gather together for worship. From the Organ Prelude to the Children's Sermon, and all the prayers and singing in between, children begin to learn what it means to worship God within a community of faith.
- Children's Sermon.
During the school year children are invited forward in the worship service to hear Rev. Mike give a special message based on the day's sermon text.
- Church School. Following the Children's Sermon, children leave for their church school classes where they will use song, craft and play to explore the same Biblical text(s) and themes being lifted up to their parents in the sermon.
- Communion. On Communion Sundays children will return to the sanctuary from their classes where they are encouraged to join with their families and indeed the whole congre-gation in celebrating the Lord's Supper.
- Youth Group. Through out the year elementary school, as well as Junior and Senior High school kids will be getting together for special events such as bowling, pizza parties, lock-ins, movies & all kinds of other fun stuff!!!
- Senior High Youth Group. This year the young people will be renovating and moving into their own Senior High Room. Ideas are in the works for a coffee house, summer volleyball and cookouts, Friday night movies at the church, and a service project trip.
- Junior High & Primary Youth Groups. Look for the usual assortment of wild and woolly activities: bowling, pizza parties, lock-ins, sledding, trip to the county fair, camp out, hockey night, swimming, & all kinds of other fun stuff!!!
- Vacation Bible School. Held in the evening for one week each July in cooperation with the Crary Mills Presbyterian Church. A wonderful experience for kids & adults.

Currently we are using a new curriculum "We Believe: God´s Word for God´s People." This curriculum will help members of all ages develop a common understanding of Reformed theology and how we as Presbyterians understand the Word of God and apply that understanding in our daily lives. For lifelong Presbyterians, We Believe continues the process of building common ground, weaving together the cords that are the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). For those who have come to the Church from other faith traditions, the curriculum serves as a basis for understanding who we are and what Presbyterians believe.
Every facet of We Believe begins with the Bible and relates to the message of Jesus Christ. The curriculum encourages biblical literacy at all age levels. We Believe tells the stories and in a variety of ways to allow for different learning styles as well as for age appropriateness. For example, in a session that focuses on the story of King David preschoolers provide sound effects and responses to the scripture reading. Younger elementary students create a poster using symbols that relate to David and then discuss of the meaning behind the symbols, while older elementary students learn and apply the concept of genealogy.

...and Jesus said,
"Let the little children come to me,
and do not stop them;
for it is to such as these
that the kingdom of heaven belongs."
